Brax Wink is open for pre-order

Pre-orders for Brax Wink is now opened. Wink is a small communicator with a physical keyboard. It runs BraxOS, our de-Googled, open-source version of Android.

What makes it private

The privacy switch on the top edge of Brax Wink

BraxOS has no Google account, no Google Play Services, no built-in trackers, no ads and no vendor analytics. None of it is installed, so there is nothing to opt out of. BraxOS is open source and builds from source, which means anyone can check what it does.

On most phones, permissions work app by app. BraxOS can turn off the mobile network, microphones, camera, location and sensors for the whole device. You can also put any of these on the physical privacy switch on the top edge. You choose what the switch controls in BraxOS, one flip turns those things off, and flipping it back restores your usual settings.

Wink can erase itself on rules you set ahead of time: a duress password, too many wrong unlock attempts, staying powered off for too long, or every restart. None of this needs an account or a connection.

Calls and messages between Brax users are encrypted end to end. Data-only mode blocks ordinary calls, SMS and MMS and keeps your mobile data, so VoIP calls and encrypted messengers keep working.

Two ways to run it

When you first set up Wink, you choose one of two modes. Omni is full de-Googled Android, where you install the apps you rely on. Zero keeps calls, messages, encrypted messaging and navigation, and leaves everything else out. Switching modes later takes a factory reset.

The hardware

Wink has a 4-inch high-resolution OLED display and a QWERTY keyboard with touch-sensitive keys you can swipe to scroll. The keyboard is a module: it clips onto the back and can be swapped for a different module, and we are designing more of them.

Inside are a MediaTek MT8875, 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage, plus a microSD slot for cards of up to 1 TB. Wink has a 50 MP rear camera, a physical SIM and eSIM, Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.4, a 3.5 mm headphone jack and dual speakers. It has been confirmed on 400 carriers in more than 60 countries so far, and it gets updates until 2032.

Every Wink comes with the QWERTY keyboard, a USB-C cable and a translucent case.
